The Federal Chairman of the Young Socialists and Deputy Chairman of the SPD, Kevin Kühnert, wants to open up democracy to citizens' assemblies. "We also need to talk about innovations within our democracy. This can include getting people more involved even between parliamentary elections, for example through citizens' assemblies," he said in an interview mit Business Insider published on 23 December 2019.

Ireland, he said, had good experience here on the issue of abortion and had resolved a conflict that had gone on forever. "I can well imagine this in Germany for some conflicts around infrastructure development, for example the construction of power lines. Here, local, national and global interests collide," Kühnert continues. A citizens' assembly could be a complementary way to moderate different interests.
